Genetic Testing
Approximately 5-10% of breast cancer is genetic in origin. An additional 10% is familial. We have isolated two genes that are responsible for the majority of genetic breast cancer. Their names are BRCA 1 and BRCA2
It takes just one tube of blood to determine if you are a carrier of one of these genes. Most insurance companies cover the costs. There are federal and state laws in place to protect patients against discrimination by health insurance companies.
Women who should be counseled and possibly tested include those with a:
- Personal history of breast cancer under the age of 50
- Personal history of ovarian cancer
- Ashkenazi Jewish descent with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer
- Family history of multiple relatives with either breast or ovarian cancer
- Family history of male breast cancer
- Family history of bilateral (left and right) breast cancer
- Family history of premenopausal breast cancer
